BLACK CAT CLUB

I will be doing several versions of this Cat. My interest started with a small newspaper ad from a 1929 Minneapolis newspaper for a night club called The Black Cat Club. Ads promised the roads leading to this “unusual, high-class dine and dance club” were paved. There was parking for 250 automobiles. You could dance in the “Frenchy atmosphere” to music by the “peppy, colored” Chat Noir Orchestra or Bill and the 9 Dixie Playmates. On top of that, you’d “meet nice people.” Positively no liquor allowed. Wink wink. And upstairs? WELL. Some people “called it The Dirty Pussy,” a local woman wrote, “and someday I will tell you why.”
