MISS BILL WISDOM AND LADY JANE RACING AT BROOKLANDS
MISS BILL WISDOM AND LADY JANE RACING AT BROOKLANDS is an 8x6 signed, watermarked print on heavy paper. I adapted a b&w photo of two women in a race car in the 1930s. The photo was enlarged and colored. I used a period poster for the background.
The driver was one of many motorsport stars who raced at Brooklands Track in England at the time but, uncommonly, was a woman. Her name was Elsie “Bill” Wisdom.
Born in 1904, she was the only girl of seven children. Her brothers nicknamed her Bill for her fiercely rough competitive nature more suited to a boy than a girl. Or, at least that was the opinion in those days.
“Bill” went on to become a major race car driver and was, at one point, the fastest woman on the circuit with a lap speed of 121.47mph.
Don’t know who the other woman is but I named her Lady Jane. It seemed terribly Bridgerton to do so. #racecar #autoracing #brooklandracetrack #femaleracer #womanautoracer #elsiewisdom #elsiebillwisdom #motorsports #motorcarrace #britishauto #feminist #peterjketchum #ketchumart
