ANNIE PEARL AT JOYLAND IN CHICAGO
ANNIE PEARL AT JOYLAND IN CHICAGO is an 8x6 signed print on heavy paper. I adapted a black and white photo booth pix of a young, very fashionable Black woman. I enlarged the snapshot and added color and a new background: a newspaper article about the opening of Joyland in 19 23.
Joyland gave Black Americans an escape from the often hostile white-owned amusement parks. One of the founders of Joyland was Augustus Williams, who was the lead attorney for cases related to Chicago’s 1919 race riotsVirgil Williams, Robert Abbot and editor Julius Taylor.
The park was on South Wabash near the Bronzeville neighborhood. It’s motto was, “A clear, heartful amusement for all people who are desirous of visiting a place where they can have pleasure without molestation.”
Joyland is now a parking lot for the Illinois Institute of Technology. The Jazz Age and spread of supper clubs contributed to its demise. So it goes. #Blackhistory #blackwoman #blackamusementpark #joyland #photoboothphoto #vintagephoto #chicago #bronzeville #augustuswilliams #joylandpark #amusementpark #jazzage #peterjketchum
