SHEEP AND POLITICS CLEANED UP
This is an alternative version of my Sheep art. There have been cats and dogs on White House lawn. There was a cow named Pauline Wayne. JFK and T.R. kept ponies. A turkey is saved yearly. A rabbit gives out eggs at Easter. But nothing from the barnyard has been as agrestic as Woodrow Wilson’s sheep. They weren’t there by the agricultural preference of the Executive Branch but as a political move. The flock of 48 kept the lawn trimmed but more importantly, their wool raised more than $100,000 ($1.5 mil today) for the Red Cross War Fund. It freed up gardeners so they could serve in the war. And sheep manure was a naturalizer fertilizer.
Manure. Washington. These two words inspired my WASHINGTON SHEEP AND MANURE print. It is an 8x6 digital art in an edition of ten signed prints. Parts of an ad from a 19th century English newspaper were adapted for my satirical piece.
Adam Irish thinks sheep should graze the National Mall. He wrote that beyond the sale of shearings, the federal flock would be an economic boon for tourism, sustainable agriculture and Urban farming.
And I think of all that could be done with the extra income generated by the sale of the manure from those national sheep and from members of Congress.
Inexpensive signed prints available exclusively here on Artspan. Also avilable on tees, pillows, stickers, etc. in my Ketchum Art Store: www.teepublic.com/t-shirts/ketchumart. Thanks. God bless the sheep. Politicians, not so much.
