FELINE FINE

The KOT (CAT) such as this one was a popular subject for Russian art prints called lubki. This style started to emerge in the 1500s when Russia was introduced to the art of wood block printing. The lubok print featured simple, bold graphics and, often, intricate patterns. They were cheaper to produce than painted icons and etchings. Latter lubki, such as the cat, were inspired by the prints of European artists including Durer and Cranach. Prints like the Cat were cheap and became popular as home and tavern decorations. I removed the cyrillic story and in its place put this terrible pun. Like mischievous cats, though, I'm not feline any shame. The limited edition print comes in different sizes on Artspan www.peterjketchum.com, and on a variety of things from the KetchumArt Red Bubble shop. See: redbubble.com/people/KetchumArt/shop.
