IN LAUDEM QUI SUM OR THIS IS WHO I AM
IN LAUDE QUI SUM is a 10 X 8 digitally created signed work on paper. An image of a vintage gilded frame hangs on a 1890s red silk brocade background. In the frame is an old lace altar cloth tatted with a center cross. The words I NEVER GOT TO BE WHO I WAS complete the image.
The Latin title translation for the art is “In Praise of WHO I AM.” I was thinking about people who, now and long ago, could never be who they were not for personal reasons, but because of social pressure, religious laws, ignorance, surreal govermental laws, etc.
I was thinking of young people and the rise in suicides. I was thinking of those killed in mindless wars: political wars, gang wars, ideological wars, intertribal wars. I was thinking of sometimes deadly inner struggles with identity, sexuality, appearance, social acceptance, beliefs. And, I was thinking of peer pressure.
The moral of the story: be who you are even if it takes courage. Society be damned. (Within reason.) Or to use a modern cliche: live your truth. Shout it! IN LAUDEM QUI SUM. In praise of who I am! Or, simply, in praise of me! Ain’t I something else! Amen.
