A found black page from a 1920s yearbook was enlarged and mounted on a green book cover. The title of an actual yearbook (not related to the people shown) was added. The L’s on the sweaters required yearbook school with “L.“ Hence, Lincoln. The white chalk writing was on the original page as is.
I added the Japanese wabi-sabi writing in blue. My ongoing wabi-sabi project uses found photos in less than perfect condition. I leave all original damages found on the image: writing, scotch tape, or marks. Wabi-sabi is an ancient Japanese aesthetic that values the imperfect, the handmade and the simple. It finds beauty in things impermanent, and incomplete. It celebrates the flawed beauty that comes with age, and the rough wear and tear of life.
So, dear viewer, meet the late Inez, Count, Edna, and Vera who were actual seniors in 1920. They had adult lives ahead of them. I wonder what they did with them.
