JESUS, POLITICS, AND THE WHOLE MORASS
JESUS, POLITICS, AND THE WHOLE MORASS is an 10X8 limited edition, signed print. It was created by adapting an old Playgirl magazine cover. Most of the headlines are as they were on the original cover, except for the obvious additions. A hunky, nearly nude guy was erased and Jesus was inserted.
The issue touted “The Ten Hottest Comics.’ But lately I’m having trouble finding the funny in this very troubled world. I replaced comedian Richard Jeni from the upper right of the original with Kim Jong Un. Like Ice, Trump, and wars all over the place, Un is not funny.
Why Jesus? Because his name and teachings are so often cited, if totally ignored, by powerful religious and political blocs. Cruelty, greed, and hypocrisy govern. The common good be damned.
I could have inserted any other icon from any other group or religion. But in Congress, and by our Vice President, Jesus is most often cited.
Faith and politics increasingly intensify our cultural and social divides. Powerful groups, and mounds of money, seem to influence everything from morality to politics and the rule of law. The widening polarization is mirrored in our courts, our schools, our libraries and our private lives. It shapes our cultural and political identities.
These multiple and powerful forces seep into, and flood, the intersection of religion and politics. It makes governing and social cohesion impossible. It leads to a dead end.
E pluribus unum? Forget it unless radical change happens on both sides of the cultural, religious, and political road. #peterjketchum #modernpolitics #Jesus #playgirl #trump #politicalsatire #instaart #artspan #artspanartist
