THE LAST STAGES OF ONANISM is an 8x6 limited edition, signed print. Why I don’t know, but I adapted an illustration labeled number 2 (hence No. 2 on my print) from R.J. Brodie’s “The Secret Companion.” I gave the guy on the two-legged couch a room with nice flooring and influencer-approved period wallpaper. Oh, and palm trees to improve the room’s air quality. The self-polluted man’s face looks like his plastic surgeon was Francis Bacon, btw.
Brodie’s “medical work on onanism” and other sexual issues was published in 1845 in London. The words “the last stage of mental exhaustion from onanism or Self-pollution” were on the illustration. At the time some members of Parliament, clergy, doctors and influencers of the day preached and warned of the medical and moral dangers of masturbation. One could go blind. Or to hell.
Some groups of believers in Roman Catholicism or Evangelical Protestantism still see masturbation and sex without the intent of procreation as inherently sinful and unholy. Check out Matthew 5:29-30.
To paraphrase, if you see or have lustful thoughts, your right hand causes you to sin. So, cut it off and throw it away. “For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” Yikes.
Bottom line, religious and government leaders should mind their own business when it comes to their constituents’ and believers’ bodies. Gawd knows some of them might make laws and set strict religious doctrine, but, in truth, are in very great risk of losing a hand, or worse.
