JAPANESE JOE DIMAGGIO AND M. M. is a signed, limited edition print. It features a post-World War II Joe DiMaggio Japanese Menko Card. Menko cards are used in a card game first played in the Edo period. Before the war, the cards featured combat related subjects. Maybe ninja, samuri, or battleships. After the war, the cards pictured things from popular culture, particularly manga, anime, Disney characters, sumo wrestlers and baseball.
Dimaggio’s adapted menko card is placed over my collage of other styles of menko cards. Behind them is the logo of the Yankees. In the forefront are images of Dimaggio’s movie star wife whose name I dare not write for fear of getting attacked by her heirs. One is an artist’s idea of Warhol’s image of wife first name M as in Mason and last M like the doctrine.
