DUCK DONALD!
DUCK DONALD! is an 8x6 work on paper adapted from a larger work of mine done for a 9/11 exhibit at Exit Art Gallery in Soho and now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian in Washington. The original was made of found bits of ephemera (vintage booklets on how to behave, get along with others, tall buildings, and ducks,) school texts on safety during the (last) Cold War bomb threat, a postcard with Twin towers, period headlines, an old check, an airplane silhouette, Howdy Doody with an American flag and various bits of text. On the outside are direct quotes from Trump. Somehow in this Trumpian COVID-19 Nightmare, the piece seemed worth adapting with the addition of new edge copy. Holed up in my lock-down shell, I feel like Bert the Turtle all over again. And my reality check? Overdrawn.
This was written by the Exit Art curator for the original exhibit:
"Exit Art, an alternative gallery space in NYC, mounted
Reactions: A Global Response to the 9/11 Attacks, in January 2002. The works reveal a wide variety of social, cultural, and emotional reactions to the terrorist attacks, the same-sized works expressed strong feelings--grief, fear, anger, hope, patriotism, even strong antiwar sentiment."
Still applies, I think.
